Most boiler faults are not boiler faults. Pressure, air, circulation and controls all present as no heat, and resetting a lockout clears the symptom while leaving the cause in place.

A boiler is the visible part of a system that also includes circulators, zone valves, an expansion vessel, a fill arrangement, air separation, safety controls and a distribution loop that may run the length of a building. When heat stops, any of those can be responsible, and the boiler is simply the component that displays the fault code.

That is why the repeated reset is such a common story. The lockout is cleared, heat returns for a day or a week, and the same code comes back. Every reset is the system reporting a condition and somebody dismissing the report. The condition, whatever it is, is still there.

How a hydronic no heat call is worked through

Four checks in sequence, because each one rules out a cause that would otherwise mislead the next.

System pressure comes first, because almost everything else depends on it. A cold system should sit at a pressure that puts positive pressure at the highest point of the loop, and a system that has drifted below that will air lock, cavitate the circulator and trip a low pressure or low water safety. If pressure is low, the question is immediately why, because a sealed heating system should not lose water.

Where pressure is being lost, the expansion vessel is the first suspect. A vessel that has lost its air charge fills with water, loses its ability to absorb expansion, and the system then pushes water out through the pressure relief valve every time it heats up. The homeowner tops it up, the cycle repeats, and the relief valve eventually fails to reseat. Testing the vessel charge takes a few minutes and resolves a very large share of chronic pressure complaints.

Circulation is next. A circulator that is running is not necessarily moving water: an airlocked pump spins without flow, and a seized rotor hums without turning. Temperature differential across the flow and return, measured at the boiler and at the zones, shows whether water is actually going anywhere. Zone valves are checked for whether they open mechanically, not just whether they are called.

Only then does the boiler itself come under examination: ignition sequence, flame current, gas pressure at the manifold, the condition of the primary exchanger, condensate trap and drainage on a condensing unit, and the behavior of the safeties. By this stage the fault is usually already located, because most of them were in the four paragraphs above.

Describing the fault accurately shortens the visit considerably. A boiler that will not fire at all is a different family from one that fires and then locks out, and one that fires happily while radiators stay cold is a third thing entirely.

If there is a code on the display, that code is worth writing down before anyone resets it. It is the most useful single piece of information available and it is routinely cleared before the technician arrives.

Locks out repeatedly, resets and runs for a while

The lockout is a report, not a fault. Overheat, low pressure, flame failure and fan faults all present this way and each points somewhere different.

Pressure keeps dropping and needs topping up

A sealed system should not lose water. Either the expansion vessel has failed, the relief valve is passing, or there is a leak somewhere on the loop.

Boiler is hot but radiators stay cold

Circulation rather than combustion. A failed circulator, a zone valve stuck shut, an airlock or a blocked strainer will all produce this.

Some radiators heat and others do not

Air in the upper parts of the loop, a balancing problem, or a zone valve failing to open. The pattern of which ones are cold identifies which.

Banging or knocking when heat is called

Scale, sludge and why water quality decides boiler life

The most common cause of premature failure in a hydronic system is the water inside it, and almost nobody looks at it.

A closed heating loop should contain treated water that has had its oxygen consumed early in life and then remains chemically stable. What many systems actually contain is water that has been drained and refilled repeatedly over the years, each refill bringing fresh oxygen and fresh minerals into a circuit full of steel and copper. The result is magnetite sludge, which is black, magnetic, abrasive and heavy.

Sludge does three things, all bad. It settles in the bottom of radiators, so the lower half stays cold while the top gets hot. It accumulates in the boiler exchanger where flow is fastest and passages are narrowest, causing hot spots, kettling noise and eventually a failure. And it wears circulator bearings, which is why a pump that should last many years fails in four.

Dealing with it is not exotic. A power flush or a chemical clean removes what is there, a magnetic filter on the return catches what forms afterwards, and an inhibitor dose keeps the water chemistry stable. On a system that has been repeatedly drained and refilled, that package frequently extends the life of the boiler more than any other intervention available at the same price.

Signs the system water needs attention

  • Radiators cold at the bottom and hot at the top across several rooms
  • Kettling or knocking from the boiler as it comes up to temperature
  • Black water when a radiator is bled or a drain point is opened
  • A circulator that has been replaced more than once in recent years
  • A system that has been drained down repeatedly for building work

Once, to see whether the fault repeats, is reasonable. Repeatedly, over days or weeks, is not. A lockout is a safety control doing its job, and clearing it without finding the cause means the condition that triggered it is still present.

Where the code relates to overheat, flame failure or flue blockage, repeated resetting is genuinely unwise. Those three exist to prevent situations that matter, and the correct response is a diagnosis.

The vessel is checked first because it is the most common and the cheapest to resolve. Topping up repeatedly without finding the cause introduces fresh oxygenated water each time, which accelerates corrosion inside the system.

Usually one of two things. Kettling, which is scale or sludge on the exchanger causing localised boiling, sounds like a kettle coming up and is a warning about water quality. Expansion noise is a sharper knock from pipework binding where it passes through a joist or a clip.

Kettling is worth acting on because it is damaging the boiler. Expansion noise is mostly a nuisance, though it can usually be reduced once the offending run is identified.

A well maintained unit in a system with decent water quality can run a long time, and cast iron sectional boilers in particular are known for it. A unit in a sludged system with a failed expansion vessel and a circulator working against restriction will fail far sooner.

Water quality and correct pressure are the two variables that most affect the answer, and both are within your control in a way that the age of the appliance is not.

Three situations end it. A failed primary exchanger or a leaking cast section. Controls that the manufacturer no longer makes and nobody stocks. Or a running repair bill that has climbed to a serious fraction of what a new appliance would cost on a unit already deep into its life.
